South Sudan – Doro Refugee Camp

South Sudan is the worlds youngest country after gaining independence from Sudan in 2011 and sadly has been in a state of civil war since 2012 with multiple parties fighting for control and tribal groups engaging in retaliative conflicts. Doro is a refugee camp in Maban County, made up of over 50,000 refugees and internally displaced people (IDP) it contains people from Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and South Sudan.

I flew to South Sudan to spend time with Medecins Sans Frontieres in their Doro based hospitals in the centre of the camp. Providing essential medical care they are crucial to the survival of the people living in the camp and the host community (Bunj). In addition to the urgent and desperately needed medical aid and treatment they provide, MSF also provide education to help improve living conditions and the ability to spot illness faster.

MSF take a pro-active approach to the problems facing the community such as malaria. I went out into the community to take part in a mosquito net distribution where 3,000 nets were given out in 6 hours, that week they had distributed 12,000 nets, since providing nets the malaria rate dropped considerably.
