I took a short flight over to Milan to shoot the legendary Metallica for a Kerrang! magazine cover. We landed, and the heavens opened, drenching everything. I had a small dual studio set up backstage at the 85,000 capacity sold-out venue.
After I’d set up, I took a break and grabbed some food. I’d been told by an old friend of mine to ask for Simon in the bands catering, not knowing who that was I said that my friend said hi and asked for Simon, I heard a shout from the kitchen of “TOM BARNES” and Simon bowled around the corner; turns out we were old school friends and hadn’t seen each other in 15 years! Simon is a wildly talented chef and was Metallica’s personal chef on tour. We had a great catch up, and it’s great to see old school friends doing so well – you can see Simons work on his Instagram here.
The band rolled into the shoot, Lars was amazed I knew their chef, and we started talking about what a small world it was. The band were great fun, professionals who enjoy themselves, it was a pleasure to shoot them. Some of the final images are below!
